From the New York Times bestselling author of On Mystic Lake comes a powerful novel of love, loss, and the magic of friendship. . . .
In the turbulent summer of 1974, Kate Mularkey has accepted her place at the bottom of the eighth-grade social food chain. Then, to her amazement, the "coolest girl in the world" moves in across the street and wants to be her friend. Tully Hart seems to have it all---beauty, brains, ambition. On the surface they are as opposite as two people can be: Kate, doomed to be forever uncool, with a loving family who mortifies her at every turn. Tully, steeped in glamour and mystery, but with a secret that is destroying her. They make a pact to be best friends forever; by summer's end they've become TullyandKate. Inseparable.
So begins Kristin Hannah's magnificent new novel. Spanning more than three decades and playing out across the ever-changing face of the Pacific Northwest, Firefly Lane is the poignant, powerful story of two women and the friendship that becomes the bulkhead of their lives.
From the beginning, Tully is desperate to prove her worth to the world. Abandoned by her mother at an early age, she longs to be loved unconditionally. In the glittering, big-hair era of the eighties, she looks to men to fill the void in her soul. But in the buttoned-down nineties, it is television news that captivates her. She will follow her own blind ambition to New York and around the globe, finding fame and success . . . and loneliness.
Kate knows early on that her life will be nothing special. Throughout college, she pretends to be driven by a need for success, but all she really wants is to fall in love and have children and live an ordinary life. In her own quiet way, Kate is as driven as Tully. What she doesn't know is how being a wife and mother will change her . . . how she'll lose sight of who she once was, and what she once wanted. And how much she'll envy her famous best friend. . . .
For thirty years, Tully and Kate buoy each other through life, weathering the storms of friendship---jealousy, anger, hurt, resentment. They think they've survived it all until a single act of betrayal tears them apart . . . and puts their courage and friendship to the ultimate test.
Firefly Lane is for anyone who ever drank Boone's Farm apple wine while listening to Abba or Fleetwood Mac. More than a coming-of-age novel, it's the story of a generation of women who were both blessed and cursed by choices. It's about promises and secrets and betrayals. And ultimately, about the one person who really, truly knows you---and knows what has the power to hurt you . . . and heal you. Firefly Lane is a story you'll never forget . . . one you'll want to pass on to your best friend.
This was the best story of friendship, so truthfully told. I felt as if I were right there. Couldn’t put it down.
Loved this book. I wish I could have had a true friendship like Kate & Tully’s.
So much emotion packed in this book. I laughed and cried during this amazing story. Kristen has a way of making you feel as though your a part of the story. Definitely a must read. Get comfy and grab your tissues, you won’t be disappointed.
Reminded me of Beaches.
A fantastic book! This book is about two (2) girls that meet, become unlikely friends and how this relationship lasts for decades! I laughed I cried and then cried! It has become one of my favorite books of all time! A MUSt read! Linda N
I love Kristen Hannah’s writing. This book was so touching and real. It will be a favorite of mine always.
Way too wordy and drawn out. Would have been more impactful if about 200 pages shorter. Also, the story line felt like a Beaches copycat. Two best friends - one ego centric, unbalanced upbringing, stardom focused; the other goody-two shoes. Lifelong friends through good and bad, then the good one gets cancer and dies. The other must make sure the daughter remembers everything.
I read this book when it first came out and wrote a scathing review then. Thought I would give it another shot since the Netflix series wasn’t half bad. I actually boycotted Kristen Hannah after reading this painful book because it was so full of terrible editing errors and blatant factual errors and now I remember why. How this author became a bestseller is beyond me. The premise is good but someone else should do the writing. The dialogue is so jerky it’s impossible to believe. This is not writing, it’s a series of sentences that try to make a story. No flow, no well written exchanges and certainly unbelievable characters. I could not finish it the second time around and have lost faith in today’s readers’ discernment. If this is good popular fiction then our standards are so impossibly low it’s obvious that the 280 character social media post has killed decent writing. Such a disappointment that this is the bar others aspire to. Waste of time and money, even if the only goal is to find out how the television series ends. Awful then, awful now.
This book is amazing! It was such an easy read that I found it hard to put down.
I liked how it starts w my same high school class of ‘78 ! Talk about memory lane ~ that’s “Firefly Lane” plus more! Enjoyed this read to the very last sentence!
This was an amazing book about love, bonds of friendship and families and loss. I couldn’t put the book down until the end.
True story of friendship.
Excellent writing. I enjoyed reading about this incredible friendship. I have wonderful friends and there is always one that you can completely be yourself with. Loved this book.
A must read. Such a wonderful story about friendship, love, difficulties, to name a few.
I’ve never read a mediocre Hannah book. She writes for your soul. Her stories will haunt you for days as you typically ache for her characters. I read this one in 2 days. It always sounds cliche to say “I just couldn’t put it down,” but it is always true with Kristen’s books. Once you read the full book, move on to the Netflix movie. It’s different, but still happy, sad, and haunting. Thank you, Kristen, for your lovely stories.
I finished this book within days. Kristin Hannah’s writing is mesmerizing. She will bring you into a whirlwind of emotions, making you cling to every page. It will pull on your heart strings. The story is such a good one. Two best friends, forever. I’m currently on the sequel, “Fly Away” which is also hard to put down. Usually I find sequels to never be as interesting as the original, but it’s almost as if the first book never ended. Highly recommend!!!
Not sure I would recommend this to anyone. It was a good, memorable book, but hard to connect to. I found myself often times wondering when the climax of the plot will come.
Firefly Lane is absolutely phenomenal! One of the best stories I’ve ever read. I enjoyed it immensely, and can’t wait to read book two. Highly recommended!
I loved this book! While I didn't grow up in the 70s, I do live in the PNW so it was fun to be familiar with what the author was talking about. This was such a good story about the ups and downs of a lasting friendship and the importance of family. You learn to love Katie so much throughout the book and I only wish that we got some more closure with Tully. The book's ending had me sobbing which I enjoy in a story.
Read this book. I’ve read several of Kristin Hannah’s books & this is my favorite. I finished it in 2 days, staying up late, waking early & neglecting chores/responsibilities/etc to steal a few minute to read. You will not be disappointed. I cried, laughed, reflected heavily on my own life and was truly sad when the book was over. It will stay with me for a long time and I’m sure I will read it again many times.
I’ve never heard of Kristin Hannah before picking up this book, and living a stone’s throw from Snohomish, it came as a welcome surprise. What I didn’t expect was a book I couldn’t detach myself from, reading until 2:30 in the morning before I fell asleep with it on my chest. I finished it it 3 days. Bearing intimate witness to Tully and Kate’s enduring friendship left me in tears of both laughter and sweet sorrow. I‘m a discerning and critical reader, but can’t give this any less than 5 stars for its authenticity, nuance, and richness, both in character and plot. This is a MUST read.
My best friend and I both read this book when we were in high school and it touched us both!
A beautiful story that left me in both tears of laughter and tears of sorrow !!
I finished this book in two days. I laughed and then at the end, I cried and cried until I had no tears left. What a beautifully written novel that is sure to hit close to home for anyone that reads it. Bravo. Maybe my favorite book of all time.
Just finished, beautiful, touching, pure perfection. So sorry when it ended.
By far my favorite book and has been for years.
The story really keeps moving and just when you think you know what is going to happened next, life throws the characters a curveball just like in real life. Very great story
Hannah is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I highly recommend not just this book but all of her books. She is an extraordinary writer, and this was an amazing, relatable, can’t put it down until I’m finished read.
Such a heartfelt, true to life story. Bitter sweet....loved this book!
I just discovered this author when I read The Great Alone this week. Well, I read this and that in the same week and couldn’t put either down. She is my new favorite author. There is something about her ability to connect you to the characters. She makes you feel like you know and love them. Each time I finish her book I miss reading it. I want to read them again! I’m going to look for more from her.
The similarities between this book and the book/movie Beaches are almost comical. It is an exact copy with the exception of Tully’s career choice being a news broadcaster vs a broadway star. I still enjoyed the story and the authors writing style, but seriously does she have no shame in stealing Beaches????

couldn't put it down! beautiful, honest relateable & heartbreaking
....but I just did not. The characters had no depth and it was just one cliche after another. A very tedious read.
I can't even function. amazing, fantastic, extraordinary !!!! you must read it!!
Once I started reading I could hardly put it down.
My favorite book by far. Took me their amazing journey. Made me relive the glory days with my friends.
A beautiful and vivid picture of real, poignant friendship and what it means to grow up. A story that will stay with me...I loved every second of this book.
This was a very long, drawn out version of the movie 'Beaches'. I am angry at myself for seeing it through to the end, thinking it would get better or at least be different from the movie. It doesn't get better and the ending is the same.
This was definitely a chick book. Sometimes I felt the author was stretching for pages, but great nonetheless. This story takes you down memory/history lane like Forrest Gump. Definitely a tear jerker and a laugh riot.
I loved this book, I could not put it down. I laughed and cried, it is really a beautiful story.
This book was so beautifully written I definitely would recommend it. I was balling at the end and it really made me look at life differently.
such an amazing book on friendship. I bece emotional as I was reading. I loved it.
This book was amazing. As usual I was brought to tears several times by Kristen's powerful stories and the important messages!
Love, love loved this book! Growing up during the 60s and 70s made it all the more magical and fun. Loved the unique characters and depths of relationships. Beautiful tale! Just discovered this author when I exchanged a previously read book of my own for Night Road at our hotel in Hawaii. I was hooked by the first page and am now getting ready to read two more before we teachers have to get back to school! So fun!
